Taste Korea with Japchae Recipe

How to make Japchae?


  • 4 oz. Korean sweet potato starch noodles
  • 4 oz. beef sirloin, thinly sliced
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 small red bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 1 small carrot, julienned
  • 3 green onions, cut into 2-inch pieces
  • 3 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 2 Tbsp. vegetable oil
  • 1 Tbsp. toasted sesame oil
  • 3 Tbsp. soy sauce
  • 2 Tbsp. sugar
  • 2 Tbsp. honey
  • 2 tsp. sesame seeds
  • Salt and pepper to taste


  1. In a pot of boiling water, cook the sweet potato noodles for 5-7 minutes, or until they’re translucent and glass-like.
  2. Drain the noodles, rinse with cold water, and drain again.
  3. Cut the noodles into manageable lengths of about 6 inches.
  4. In a bowl, marinate the beef with minced garlic, 1 tablespoon of soy sauce, and a pinch of salt and pepper.
  5. In a skillet, heat vegetable oil over medium heat and stir-fry the beef until browned and cooked through. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
  6. In the same skillet, add sesame oil and stir-fry the onions for 2-3 minutes until translucent.
  7. Add red bell pepper and carrot and stir-fry for 3-4 minutes until tender but still crisp.
  8. Add the noodles and the remaining soy sauce, sugar, honey, sesame seeds, and green onions. Stir-fry for another 2-3 minutes or until everything is well combined and heated through.
  9. Add the cooked beef to the skillet and stir-fry for an additional minute.
  10. Transfer to a serving dish and serve immediately.
